VOICE
If you have a problem with your voice, you are not alone. Many people experience voice changes that can affect their professional and social lives. Many voice problems involve an underlying medical problem. Though not life-threatening, they do usually require regular follow-up with your doctor and possible voice training with a behavioral voice specialist.
Dr. Stern, and his staff provide an ear nose and throat exam, videostroboscopy, a behavioral voice evaluation, acoustic data analysis, and voice therapy / training for singers, actors, teachers, and other professional voice users. LSVT is also available for people with Parkinson Disease.
Take the Voice Handicap Index-10 or the Singing Voice Handicap Index to pinpoint symptoms that may indicate that you have a voice problem.
SWALLOWING
Swallowing disorders can affect people of all ages. Common signs of a swallowing disorder are coughing when eating or drinking, food getting stuck in the throat, pain on swallowing, or choking when swallowing. Underlying problems such as excess production of acid from the stomach can cause all these symptoms, but so can other more serious diseases.
Dr. Stern and his staff provide state-of-the-art testing of swallowing, including an ear nose and throat exam, a clinical swallow evaluation, and a flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. A flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallow, or FEES, allows the doctor and therapist to directly visualize foods being swallowed, to determine how the swallowing mechanism is functioning. This is done in the office. Swallow therapy is also provided to address any necessary diet modification, muscle exercises, or swallowing strategies while eating and drinking.
Take the Eating Assessment Tool to see if your symptoms indicate that you have a swallowing problem.
